Frances Singer-Hayward, Amigos human stated that she couldnt be more thrilled at this latest phase of keeping AMIGOS legacy alive. Since his tragic death several years ago after a brave battle with cancer it couldnt be more appropriate that he be made into a cartoon character which was always my goal for him to make him The Donald Duck of Potcakes as it were only as a mutt with a mission, that of raising awareness to the tragic plight of so many potcakes and all animals. The website, however, doesnt stop there. through AMIGO, and his experiences, it teaches children the importance of caring. Helping those less fortunate and in need, and giving back It is my hope that through this site Amigos legacy will be perpetuated in a way that will keep him forever alive, even after Im gone from this earth. Ms. Singer-Hayward went on to say that that it never ceases to amaze and touch her heart as to the true impact AMIGO made while he was alive. She told of how there is not a single place I can go to in The Bahamas - walking through airports, clearing customs, walking on the street in Nassau, going into stores, where people dont come up to me and speak of himtelling of how much he is missed and how much he meant to everyoneI was even standing watching Junkanoo in Nassau one Christmas and a group of people said arent you the lady with that dog Amigo? and though it breaks my heart, it strengthens my resolve to keep his mission alive I can only hope his mission will be kept alive as a cartoon character and that this website, which is wonderfully entertaining, will help to do that There is also an illustrated childrens book about AMIGO and his story soon to be published with illustrations by the creators of Frosty the Snowman, The Last Unicorn, and many other cartoon classics. AMIGO started life as a tragic stray pup that Ms. Singer-Hayward found outside of Grand Bahama Airport. He then became the poster dog for the HSGB Spay/Neuter Campaign which Ms. S-H had only recently founded (and funded) starring in wonderful, eye catching posters (which have since won awards for HSGB) as well as all other issues dealing with treatment of animals with the slogan Lets Make Grand Bahama and Animal Suffering-free Zone. His face was soon everywhere, on t-shirts, hats, golf shirts, as well as in tourist magazines. He was chosen Story of the Year by the Nassau Tribune, and received constant publicity with his school visits and awareness raising activities. He was always accompanied by his friend and trainer, Canadian animal behaviorist William (Bill) Grimmer, who is responsible for socializing him, bringing out his personality and making him into the little superstar that he became Taking his message abroad, AMIGO lived an amazing, madcap, purposeful life, hobnobbing with celebrities, starring in the HSUS BEKIND campaign, appearing on Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, featured in magazine and newspaper articles in the States, flying across America in his very own first class seat as a celebrity pet, receiving the ARF (Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons) Ambassador of Goodwill award presented by TV and film star Alec Baldwin, starring in Public Service Announcements shown on TV stations across the country along with hip hop impresario Russell Simmons and HSUS CEO Wayne Pacelle, commandeering his own rescue mission (The Amigo Express) to Tylertown Mississippi to bring back animals displaced after Hurricane Katrina, after which he starred in two Mardi Gras Parades as King of Barkus and the next year Grand Marshall, receiving the Hollywood Life Breakthrough Award presented by film star Alicia Silverstone and mcd by Eddie Murphy, walking the catwalk in fashion shows to benefit homeless animals, only to succumb in September 2007 after his brave battle with cancer which had required amputation of his right hind leg, as well as grueling chemotherapy but left him typically undaunted until the very end.. A commemorative stamp based on a painting by world renowned Bahamian artist Alton Lowe was issued this past year as part of the Potcake Series of which AMIGO was the inspiration. AMIGO also was the cover dog of the magazine Abaco Life last April. Ms. Singer-Hayward has established AMIGOS FUND (www.amigosfund.org) as well as The Friends of Amigo Foundation in order to keep the legacy and mission of this gallant little potcake alive. It is hoped that he will now live forever as a cartoon character, as shown in his new website. Ms. Singer-Hayward made a plea that people will support the Humane Societies throughout the Bahamas and of course The Humane Society of Grand Bahama with which he was so connected. She stated that the purpose for all of this is to raise awareness on the treatment of animals and encourage everyone to support their local animal shelters

BIFF provides premieres of crowd-pleasers and art house cinema. These are films that are thought provoking and expand our cine-literate culture. The beauty of going to the movies is you to be entertained and whilst learning about other societies and cultures. There is always a sense of mystic created when we celebrate cinema. Every year BIFF has built a setting for Bahamians and visitors and has provided Sun Sand Sea Cinema Culture and Celebrities during its December event. And we can become the Caribbean Cannes Film Festival and we can bring even more guests to our shores. There are over 6000 film festivals in the world, and during our festival we can again place OUR Riviera into the spotlight of the international festival circuit. People block out their calendars each year to visit film festivals around the world. We have the hotels, we have the Sun and the Sea and the film festival is another attraction that brings additional guests to us. In six years we have shown over 500 films, we have presented Career Achievement Tributes to celebrities such as Johnny Depp, Lawrence Fishburne, Daryl Hannah, Nicolas Cage and Roger Corman. We have created educational programs to teach film-making in schools around Nassau and assisted in the development of films such as RAIN and CHILDREN OF GOD. Also, 5 international films that have premiered at BIFF have gone on to win Academy Awards. And by doing this BIFF and the whole Bahamas have received worldwide international exposure and we were once again placed on the world map. BIFF has been a huge success attracting thousands of people each year, both local and international. In addition to the attendees the international press also came to our shores to record this quality event and a publicity of such magnitude would have cost in 2009 alone over 4 million dollars in advertisement with a PR value of about $ 15 million. But in order to do it again we need your support. Make the Bahamas International film festival a reality again, from the 1st to the 5th of December.

At intermission, David challenged audience members to come on stage and attempt to do Vocal-Play, which is the copyrighted term that Naturally 7 created to define the way they perform their music using solely their voices without any instruments. Three brave young persons came on stage during intermission and entertained the crowd. The big intermission surprise was when Grand Bahama Performing Arts Society founder, Dalia Feldman was coaxed to go on stage; she performed a portion of the Broadway show tune, Popular to thunderous applause. Naturally 7 expressed their gratitude for the warm hospitality they received, from their red carpet arrival to the Junkanoo Rush Out they participated in at the end of their Sunday May 2nd workshop at Bishop Michael Eldon Auditorium. Ross University VP Business Planning and Development announces 3 year lease extention in Freeport

Freeport, Bahamas - The Bahamas Weekly presents an update on the Ross University Bahamas clinical site by way of an interview with Mr. Sandi Cutler, Vice President of Business Planning and Development, Ross University recorded on April 23rd, 2010. In this exclusive video interview Mr. Cutler shares information in regard to recent concerns expressed in the local media and reaffirms Ross University's commitment to remain in The Bahamas. Cutler also announced a 3-year extension on their lease at Seahorse Plaza. "We are not closing. We have a program we are continuing here. It is our Medical Education program. It is very successful. It is a program for people who are planning to attend Ross. It is a review and preparatory program. It's been here for a couple semesters and we will be adding to its enrollment." "Ross is going to stay open. We are staying here and we will have some faculty and staff here continuously. Ross is not closing, it is just that we've taken a piece of the program and shifted it back to Dominica until we get the California approval." "We've just agreed to a three-year extension in the Seahorse Plaza. We did that because when we originally did the lease it was more short-term because we thought we might be building that new campus more quickly. Now that we've had to delay things a little bit it just made sense given everything we've invested in here, to extend the lease here, and then to continue in the long-term to build out at our campus as we've always planned. Ross University was founded in 1978 and is a provider of medical and veterinary education offering doctor of medicine and doctor of veterinary medicine degree programs. The School of Medicine is located in Dominica, West Indies, and the Freeport, Grand Bahama campus recently opened in January 2009. The School of Veterinary Medicine is located in St. Kitts. Ross University Last Updated: Apr 21, 2010 - 2:49:27 PM (VIDEO) Grand Bahama physicians speak at Ross University Pathology Conference By The Bahamas Weekly News Team Apr 21, 2010 - 1:49:53 PM Email this article Printer friendly page Freeport, Grand Bahama Island - On March 22nd Ross University Bahamas Clinical Site held a Pathology Conference on Tumor Immunology. The event was presented by the student Pathology Club and was sponsored by the Osler Society. Local physicians Dr. John Clement and Dr. Kevin Bethel from the Immune Augmentation Therapy Clinic were guest speakers at the event. The IAT Clinic has been open in Freeport for 33 years and it is licensed for the experimental treatment of cancer. The following is from the IAT website: Lawrence Burton Ph.D. opened the IAT Clinic in Freeport after his many years of successful research therapy in the USA on the immune systems of hundreds of terminally ill cancer clients. With the establishment of the IAT in the Bahamas, Dr. Burton was able to further refine his treatments with the use of isolates serum cytokines and immune directive proteins from healthy people to help improve the immune system in people with cancer. Our objective at the IAT Centre is to not only restore function to your immune system but to identify any loss of function you may have in any system, and direct you to restorative and regenerative therapies for that system. You are only as healthy as your least functional system in your body. We also rely on cancer vaccines to stimulate a patients own immune system to recognize and destroy tumor cells In this video you will hear from both Dr. Kevin Bethel and Dr. John Clement, as well as a short portion of each of the student speakers. Dr. Clement says, "In the past ten years there has been no major advance by any drug company in the treatment of cancer. We've stopped. The drug companies now are loaded up with money and the next big financial disaster is going to be with the drug companies ... Until the youth, who are now emerging from Ross and other places, we've got to get to work and start discovering new advances in medicine, because the drug companies have stopped." This has been a wonderfully informative and enjoyable Tumor Immunology Conference which the pathology Club organized. The club members presented current research about specific areas of immune system action against cancer which was informative for all of us who attended. The conference gave the students practice in presenting medical information to colleagues and professorsthis is excellent preparation for their clinical clerkship experiences which will start in the coming months. The Ross community was fortunate also to have Drs. Clement and Bethel from IAT as guest speakers, since their work is pioneering in area, said Dr. Harriet Myers, Associate Professor of Behavioral Sciences. "We often associate tumor or cancer with chemotherapy and radiation and their side effects. Rarely do we stop to think about how cancer is not normal and our bodies are designed to fight against anything abnormal. Many researchers have focused on this idea of assisting our own bodies to fight against cancer. Some even put these ideas to practical use. It was great to have Dr. Clement , the medical director at IAT share with us their research and work along with Dr. Bethel, " said Ross student, Jennifer Lee who led the organization of the conference, and was also a speaker herself. Dr. Michael Yakubovskky, Professor of Pathology at Ross University said, "In my opinion we had a breakthrough event here because we established bridges between our Ross community and the Immune Augmentation Therapy Clinic. Dr. Bethel presented the newest and freshest data in one type of immune therapy in cancer patients. We will continue our collaboration with local researchers and physicians and our students will benefit; and we may be able to contribute to the development of the local and medical scientific community in The Bahamas too." Other Ross students speaking at the event were Jessica Porter, Daniel Urias, Kambiz Nasir, Trecia Henriques, Greta Jones, and Utibe Ekong. See a related article with Photos of the event. Ray Ellin Live at NYC Comedy Club Bahamas

Freeport, Grand Bahama Island The 2nd Annual NYC Comedy Club event commenced Friday March 12th 2010 at The Treasure Bay Casino to a standing room only crowd. Midway through the show comedian Ray Ellin came on stage to do his routine, it was at this point during the show that uncontrollable bouts of spontaneous laughter erupted far beyond even what Ray anticipated as he proceeded to concoct an impromptu routine that featured the duo of twin brothers who are , amongst other things, the principals behind the proposed Yellowfin Tuna Net Fishing venture on Grand Bahama Island (The Bahamas Pelagic Aquaculture Tuna Fishing Program). Unbeknownst to Ray, he haphazardly connected with the audience with irony and humor that resounded across the length and breadth of this island and beyond. In his routine, Ray probed the twin brothers with questions like: What kind of work do you do? Are you some kind of mobsters? On and on he went amidst uncontrollable laughter so unfathomable to him that he finally bellowed: WILL SOME ONE TELL ME WHATS GOING ON? Admittedly, this video has been one of the most requested of our almost 300 video productions library; we are pleased to finally have it ready for your entertainment. Enjoy!

(VIDEO) The Bahamas National Trust’s Tuna Net Fishing Town Meeting

Grand Bahama Island The Bahamas Weekly is pleased to present herewith, video coverage of The Bahamas National Trusts Tuna Net Fishing Town Meeting, which took place Monday March 1st 2010. The focus of this standing room only debate could arguably be described as the most heated topic surrounding the preservation of our marine heritage since long line fishing. The Bahamas Pelagic Aquaculture Tuna Fishing Program as proposed by David and Paul Mellor has sparked vigorous debate over the last couple of weeks. The Mellors claim of sustainability and conservation in the harvest and farming of tuna in growing cages in the ocean is an emotionally charged topic throughout the international maritime community and was vigorously debated. This town meeting moderated by Dr. Pamela Etuk was much anticipated as both panelists and audience alike openly discussed the merits of purse seine netting and its ecological and economic affects on our tourism based archipelago nation. The audience included representatives from The Billfish Foundation, other Bahamian Aquaculture programs, marine biologists, sport fisherman, tour operators, taxi drivers, divers and a multitude of concerned citizens from various walks of life. Although the government has stated that they are not minded to permit the use of purse seine or net fishing within the waters of The Bahamas, the Mellors persist in presenting their unpopular venture even in the face of overwhelming global contempt. This dynamic video presentation has been divided into two parts. Part 1 is 54 minutes and Part 2 is 5 minutes and contains a contribution by Grand Bahamian Terry Pace.
